‘Oh sea, I knew it would be hard, being with you
Maybe I haven’t loved enough
Make me free of myself, make me free from hardness’
The poet became the sea…

Poet and Sunset in the Sea

by Mark Hill

Cuprous sky (copper?)
Sea of lead
Scatter of phosphoric clouds
Coast like a pile of iron, far away
And a tired poet in the turbulent sea.
Fear of sharks with teeth of steel
Fear of coming night, that covers the sky
With a dark metallic curtain
A curtain that is nailed with billions of sharp diamonds
*
An amorous poet surrounded by hardness:
Hard sky, hard sea, hard coast, hard destiny
And a hard world
In that time and space, and in that world
Maybe only a poet could conjure up a sea fairy
A fairy with a heart as soft as blossom
A fairy that sings a song of hope and rescue
*
Tired poet with little life remaining
Whispered to the sea the last verse of his final poem:
‘Oh sea, I knew it would be hard, being with you
Maybe I haven’t loved enough
Make me free of myself, make me free from hardness’
*
The eternal sea sent her biggest wave
And took him inside herself
And the poet became perpetual life
The poet became the sea…
The storm ended and tranquillity came back to the sea
And the world flowed softly on.
